Andrew Carter\u2019s linocut prints, \u2018All the Days of December; Ittens Star and Piero\u2019s Palette\u2019 are from a series of prints that he has made over the last three years. There are 32 individually cut blocks made from leaves found on Peckham Rye throughout December. They are Linden leaves, symbols of hope and fertility. In these colour arrangements Carter has created dialogues with different artists using the leaves as a playful colour palette. In \u2018Piero\u2019s Palette the colours were matched to elements in Piero Della Francesca\u2019s Baptism of Christ in the National Gallery, whilst in \u2018Itten\u2019s Star\u2019 32 blocks are overlayed exploring the colour combinations in Bauhaus artist Johannes Itten\u2019s colour theories.<\/p>\n

His other landscape composition, \u2018Moidart\u2019 was made this summer after travelling to a remote part of the Scottish Highlands Carter says;<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter creating watercolour studies and drawings I alighted on this complicated pattern of marks depicting the figure of my nephew, Jack, on the rocks in Moidart. He seemed tiny and fragile in this massive space and yet I knew he was totally engaged with fishing for mackerel and coley. I have tried to cut this block using hundreds of fragmented, calligraphic marks, reminiscent of the great engraver, Thomas Bewick and Van Gogh\u2019s reed pen drawings. I am interested in the pattern and the space.\u201d<\/p>\n
