I study the movement of water in the natural environment, most specifically the energy expressed in turbulent wave movements and waterfalls. My challenge is to preserve a sense of flux and dynamism while using the static medium of print.

I make original prints using traditional aquatint and etching techniques. Each aquatinted work is complex, combining contrasting passages of fine detail with more spontaneous marks, splashes and sprays. The energy running through water is visible not only within the internal structure of waves and cascades, but also and more importantly in the surrounding air, delineated by water droplets and haze. Aquatint gives me the freedom to interpret the turbulence and excitement of the energy of the natural world expressively. I also like to explore the imprint water leaves on coastal outcrops of rocks and cliffs, using a combination of etching and embossing techniques.

Born in Stockholm, Sweden and educated in the UK, Ferm received an M.A. in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art in 2010, a BA (hons.) in History of Art/ Greek Civilization from the University of Leeds in 1979 and a PGCE in Art and Design Education from the University of London Institute of Education in 1984. She has divided her time until recently between printmaking and teaching Art and Design and is now focussing entirely on her printmaking practice. She exhibits both nationally and internationally in the USA, Japan and Australia and her work is held by the Ashmolean Museum, in the Clifford Chance Collection and in numerous other private collections. Ferm is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and has worked on the RE council, she is also a member of LOOP and of Artichoke Printmakers Studio.

More Info:

Instagram: @marianneferm_art

contact: watermarks3@btinternet.com

LOOP Online Exhibition:

LOOP 2024
LOOP 2023
LOOP 2020

Water is an important and re-occurring motif in my work.
