Sue Baker-Kenton

Sue Baker Kenton is an artist for whom drawing is pivotal and whose primary subject is the figure. The twin themes she repeatedly returns to in her work are; the passage of time and the exploration of physical entity, the permeability of bodies, our embodiment and disembodiment. Her ideas are informed by her lived experience as a woman and can originate through specific research, a chance encounter or a glimpsed interaction.

Her practice engages with the analogue nature and material resistance of traditional print processes, using process as an intervention to embrace observation and improvisation. She is interested in creating a surface that evidences the artists ‘hand’ and therefore the artists’ relationship to the technology used. Her working methods when etching echo her background working in the life room where the time working from direct observation is integral to how the subject reveals itself. She seeks to navigate a route between precision and expression and to create images that are excavated yet direct and have their own economy of language.

After completing her MA in 2005 Sue was awarded a Gfta for individual research into Lithography at the Curwen Print Study Centre. Since that time she has taught extensively as a specialist print tutor (DMU BA (Hons) Fine Art, UAL Foundation Diploma and the Advanced Course Programme at City Lit) and 2016 she was appointed etching fellow at RA Schools, Piccadilly, London.

Sue is based at Leicester Print Workshop and has been associated with the workshop in different capacities since 2010. Currently, a resident in one of the upper floor artist studios in addition to being a member of the workshop below.
