Minglu Zhang

My work arises from personal feelings and relates to memories of migration. My childhood was marked by constant migration; I lived in different places with different family members. So, for me, home is both the beginning and the end of migration, and migration itself reshapes, expands and even deconstructs the concept of home. I am particularly interested in the fluid, shifting relationship between these elements. Home implies identity and security, and I believe that an ongoing engagement with these issues can help one to maintain a stable core of self in different environments.

About this work — I titled it Speech in Pieces.

I created it because I am often asked the question: “Where is your home?”

And I find it hard to answer.In that moment, I feel the inadequacy of language — my memories emerge in fragments, disjointed and incoherent, like a damaged film reel.

I wanted to convey this quiet, restrained, yet deeply felt sense of melancholy.

I have been using cardboard for printmaking. Unlike aquatint etching, it allows for richly textured and powerful blacks. After printing, the surface of the plate itself—its deep black contrasted with areas of gold—also creates a striking and unique visual effect. I’ve made it a part of my work.
